Java Senior Engineer (L5 Backend Software Engineer)

We are looking for an experienced Senior Backend Software Engineer (L5) to join our growing team in Tallinn or Malta. This is a senior individual contributor role focused on technical leadership, product evolution, and engineering excellence rather than people management. You will lead the development of complex backend features within your team, drive technical decisions, and contribute hands-on to raising engineering standards and quality. About the Role Design, build, and evolve high-load distributed systems and microservice-based applications, with a strong focus on scalability, reliability, and maintainability. Own complex backend features and components end to end, from technical design and implementation through production operation and continuous improvement. Lead the development of technical initiatives within your team, breaking down problems, defining execution plans, and driving delivery in alignment with product and business priorities. Contribute to and help shape the technical roadmap for your team's systems and areas of ownership. Lead technical design discussions and make sound architectural decisions within your team and areas of expertise. Contribute hands-on through implementation, code reviews, debugging, and solving complex engineering problems. Identify and drive improvements in performance, reliability, observability, and technical debt within the systems owned by your team. Collaborate with other engineering teams and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver end-to-end solutions and align technical decisions. Mentor engineers, provide constructive technical feedback, and help raise engineering quality and standards within the team. Take a leading technical role in production incidents involving your areas of ownership, helping identify root causes and drive follow-up improvements. Qualifications 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with strong backend development experience in Java. Proven experience designing, building, and operating large-scale, event-driven distributed systems and microservice-based applications in production. Strong understanding of system design, scalability, reliability, high availability, and performance. Experience owning complex features, components, or services end to end, from technical design and implementation through production rollout and continuous improvement. Experience designing and optimizing relational databases. Experience with observability, monitoring, distributed tracing, and troubleshooting production systems. Track record of leading technical discussions, contributing to the technical direction of a team, and driving consensus around engineering decisions. Strong engineering practices, including code reviews, automated testing, safe production rollouts, monitoring, and continuous quality improvement. Ability to balance short-term product and business priorities with long-term technical sustainability. Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Experience working within the iGaming industry.
