Description
On the floor of a working factory, someone is running a job off a screen. That screen belongs to a manufacturing system that's over twenty years old and now being rebuilt from the ground up. You'd set the direction for the front-end of the new one. This is operator software, used by skilled people doing real work under time pressure. When the interface fails, production is interrupted, so the quality of what you ship is felt on the floor the same day. You'd validate designs directly with the operators who use them, face to face. The client application has recently been modernised onto React 19 and Vite, and now it needs extending across every part of the workflow as the business migrates off the legacy system, without regressing the people who depend on it mid-shift. You'd own the architecture, the standards and the craft, and lift the existing engineers as you go. What matters here: You've led a product front-end on modern React and TypeScript, because the testing policy, architecture and standards the team works to will be yours to set. You've built for non-expert users in the real world (manufacturing, logistics, healthcare or similar), so you already understand why factory-floor UX is a different discipline from a consumer app. You're happy coaching, because part of the role is raising the front-end craft of the engineers already on the team. Remote, with 1-2 days a month on-site in Scotland. Outside IR35, 12 months + project.
