Description

For a Medtech customer in Belgium, we are searching for a full remote freelance Python Engineer to join a small team responsible for designing, developing, and industrialising scientific algorithms for the analysis of medical images used in clinical trials. This is not a web development role, you will be implementing algorithms executed in production environments. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys mathematical problem-solving, scientific software development, and working on technically challenging image analysis problems. Responsibilities Analyse software requirements and translate scientific concepts into robust software solutions. Take research prototypes and evolve them into production-quality algorithms. Design, implement and optimise Python-based scientific algorithms for medical image analysis. Develop and maintain image processing and mathematical analysis pipelines. Write clean, efficient and well-documented code. Develop comprehensive unit and integration tests to ensure software quality. Perform code reviews and contribute to engineering best practices. Work closely with R&D scientists to refine and validate algorithms. Support cloud-based processing pipelines for large-scale image analysis. Contribute to continuous improvements in software architecture, performance and maintainability. Work within a small engineering team where every member has significant technical ownership. Experience Strong Python software development experience in scientific or engineering environments. Experience with scientific computing libraries, including: NumPy, SciPy and Image processing libraries such as scikit-image and/or OpenCV Solid understanding of mathematics, numerical methods and matrix operations. Experience developing algorithms rather than business or web applications. Experience writing automated unit tests using frameworks such as pytest or unittest. Familiarity with Git and GitLab-based development workflows. Experience working in Linux/Unix environments. Comfortable with shell scripting (Bash or similar). Strong software engineering practices including code reviews, version control and documentation. Ability to work closely with multidisciplinary R&D teams. Bonus Skills Medical image analysis experience (CT, MRI or similar modalities). Experience with clinical trial software or regulated software development. Knowledge of cloud-based processing pipelines. Experience optimising scientific software for performance. Exposure to DICOM or medical imaging standards. Alternative Profile Candidates with strong MATLAB experience will also be considered, particularly where they have developed mathematical or image-processing algorithms. Experience migrating MATLAB algorithms into Python would be advantageous.
