Description

About Risk Agency Risk Agency is a commercial insurance brokerage building its own software platform instead of relying on the legacy systems our industry has accepted for decades. Our platform runs the business every day, and we improve it every week. We're looking for someone who enjoys solving problems, improving systems, and learning. The Opportunity This is not a traditional software development role. Every work order begins with understanding the problem before a single line of code is written. Writing code is only one part of the job. The right person enjoys debugging, asks good questions, challenges assumptions, and cares more about getting it right than getting it done quickly. They also will see the big picture of upward mobility at our company and a potential leadership position. Responsibilities Work in-person at our Dallas, TX office for 20+ hours a week. Own assigned technical work orders from investigation through completion. Audit application behavior and database records to determine root cause before proposing changes. Build fixes using whatever tools help you produce the best result. Manage code changes through GitHub while following established deployment procedures. Verify every change before closing the work order. Escalate issues that require architectural, financial, or security decisions. Identify opportunities to simplify workflows, improve reliability, and reduce technical debt. What Success Looks Like Success is measured by accuracy, judgment, and consistency. The strongest engineers investigate first, verify their work, document what changed, and ask questions before making assumptions. Required Qualifications Comfortable reading and understanding existing code. Basic SQL knowledge and the ability to investigate data. Comfortable using AI as part of the development process and willing to adapt as the tools evolve. Excellent written documentation and communication. Willingness to accept feedback and continuously improve. Preferred Qualifications Experience with React, TypeScript, or modern web applications. Familiarity with Supabase or PostgreSQL. Experience using Git and GitHub. Exposure to commercial insurance or other highly regulated industries. Personal projects demonstrating curiosity and technical problem solving. What Is Not Required A computer science degree. Professional software engineering experience. Insurance industry experience. We care far more about judgment, discipline, and the ability to learn than a specific career path. Compensation and Growth $35 per hour to start, 15 to 25 hours per week. Meet the expectations for the role and the rate moves to $42, then $55. You will not have to ask. We tell you exactly what the bar is, and you know when you have cleared it. This role starts part time, but it is intended to grow. Our goal is to invest in one person who learns the business, grows with the company, and eventually earns a full-time role with significant responsibility for the platform. Our Hiring Process Every candidate completes a short technical assessment focused on problem solving, investigation, and judgment before moving into interviews.
