The Role We are seeking a Senior Back End Developer to join our software development team in Leatherhead. This will involve taking on a central role in designing, building, and maintaining the APIs and backend infrastructure that power our complex applications. The successful candidate will work closely with front-end developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to translate requirements into robust, maintainable backend solutions. This role will contribute to architectural decisions, and drive continuous improvement in our codebase and development practices. Key Responsibilities Design and develop well-architected APIs for complex, data-intensive applications Lead backend feature development from specification through deployment and monitoring Collaborate closely with front-end developers and product teams to deliver integrated solutions Write clean, testable, maintainable code and contribute to code quality through peer review Build and maintain comprehensive automated test suites (unit, integration, and end-to-end) Identify performance bottlenecks, optimize database queries, and improve system efficiency Participate actively in agile ceremonies and contribute to sprint planning and retrospectives Mentor junior developers and share knowledge across the engineering team Suggest and implement improvements to existing systems, tools, and development processes Required Skills & Experience Essential 5+ years of professional backend development experience Proven expertise in designing and implementing RESTful APIs and scalable backend systems Strong proficiency in Java Solid understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and SQL query optimization Hands-on experience with version control (Git) and modern CI/CD practices Demonstrated experience working in agile/scrum teams Linux/Unix command-line proficiency Experience with graph databases (Neo4j) Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities Strong written and verbal communication skills, with ability to articulate technical concepts to diverse audiences Desirable Familiarity with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) Experience with build and deployment automation tools (Jenkins, GitLab CI) Knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) Exposure to microservices architectures Degree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent demonstrated experience) Personal Attributes A collaborative engineer who enjoys working cross-functionally with front-end developers and stakeholders Someone who takes pride in code quality and is invested in building robust, maintainable solutions A proactive problem-solver who can juggle multiple priorities without losing sight of detail A continuous learner eager to stay current with emerging technologies and best practices
