Backend Devops Engineer

This is an AI-first startup, VC funded with a small team in NZ. Role Description  This is a full-time remote role for a Backend DevOps Engineer. The person in this role will be working on integrating customer applications (React, NextJS, Angular) into our existing cloud platform (Terraform, Ruby on Rails) and integrating their frontend stack with our tooling. The Backend DevOps Engineer will collaborate closely with product, design, and engineering teams to ensure seamless integration between backend services, real customer applications, and design systems. The role also involves monitoring system performance, troubleshooting production issues, and contributing to best practices and documentation for operational excellence. Qualifications Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools and practices to provision, manage, and version backend infrastructure; specifically, Terraform, Docker, and Kubernetes. Essential language expertise: Ruby on Rails, Docker, Typescript, React/NextJS. Good to have: Go, Terraform. Experience building AI-first tooling, skills and workflows with Claude, Codex, Cursor. Hands-on experience with Continuous Integration and deployment pipelines, including configuration, optimisation, and maintenance. Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional, remote teams and communicate clearly about technical concepts and trade-offs. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
