Java Chief Software Engineer

About The Role We are looking for an experienced Java Chief Software Engineer with strong expertise in designing, building and operating scalable, secure and high-performing backend applications and API-driven platforms. As a Chief Software Engineer, you will be expected to provide technical leadership, drive engineering standards, mentor engineers and contribute hands-on to the design and delivery of critical platform capabilities. The ideal candidate will have deep experience with Java, Spring Boot, API design, microservice architecture, automated testing, CI/CD, cloud deployments and enterprise integration patterns. Experience with Camunda or workflow platforms is an advantage. Key Responsibilities As a Chief Software Engineer, you will be expected to: Lead the design, development and maintenance of Java-based microservices and APIs using Spring Boot. Define scalable, secure and resilient backend solutions, guiding architectural decisions around microservices, SOA, cloud deployment, observability and integration patterns. Build high-performing REST and SOAP APIs, including contracts, models, error handling, versioning, documentation, security and authentication standards. Ensure code quality, maintainability and testability through reviews, engineering standards, reusable components and robust logging, validation, retry and recovery mechanisms. Integrate applications with internal and external systems, databases and messaging platforms such as RabbitMQ, IBM MQ or Kafka. Support cloud, CI/CD and containerized deployments using tools and platforms such as AWS, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Docker, Kubernetes or OpenShift. Monitor application performance, troubleshoot production issues and lead root cause analysis for complex technical problems. Collaborate with product owners, business analysts, architects and engineers to turn business needs into robust technical solutions. Mentor engineers and promote best practices in Java development, API design, testing, cloud usage, DevOps and secure coding. Continuously improve engineering practices, platform reliability, developer experience and delivery efficiency, including relevant workflow automation tools such as Camunda. Key Qualifications Primary skills Languages: Java 8, 11 or 17+, preferably Java 17+; SQL Java frameworks: Spring Boot; Spring Framework Backend and API development: REST API design and development SOAP services Microservices SOA API security Database: MS SQL MySQL MongoDB or similar NoSQL databases Secondary Skills Version control: Git; Bitbucket or GitHub Cloud: AWS; PaaS platforms DevOps and CI/CD: Azure DevOps; Jenkins; GitHub Actions Containerisation: Docker; Kubernetes; OpenShift Messaging and integration: RabbitMQ; IBM MQ; Kafka Operating systems: Windows; Linux Architecture: Microservices SOA Event-driven architecture Distributed systems Required Experience Strong experience with Java 17+, Spring Boot and building scalable backend services and APIs. Solid knowledge of REST API design, documentation, versioning, error handling and security, including OAuth2, JWT and token-based authentication. Experience with SOAP services, enterprise integrations and messaging technologies such as RabbitMQ, IBM MQ or Kafka. Good understanding of microservices, SOA, distributed systems and object-oriented programming principles. Experience with testing practices and tools such as JUnit, Mockito or similar frameworks. Hands-on experience with CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes or OpenShift, and cloud-ready development, preferably with AWS. Familiarity with secure coding, cloud security best practices, troubleshooting, performance tuning and root cause analysis. Ability to mentor engineers and help raise engineering standards across teams. Good-to-have Experience Experience with Camunda or similar workflow automation platforms is an advantage, especially knowledge of BPMN/DMN, Camunda 8, job workers, connectors and workflow orchestration. Familiarity with reusable workflow components, production monitoring tools such as Camunda Operate, Optimize or OpenSearch, and improvements related to upgrades, migrations, performance, scaling or resilience.
